Business Locations

The right location for your business

Auckland city’s 310,000 employees work in different locations all around the city. Each of these areas is attractive to specific business types, reaching from light manufacturing industries to R&D or higher education facilities. Moreover, the areas are vibrant, changing and permanently redefining itself, like Auckland’s CBD, Rosebank or Tamaki:

CBD

The Central Business District (CBD) is the biggest employment centre in New Zealand and the country’s economic heart. Some 80,000 employees work in the CBD, which is about 25 per cent of Auckland’s workforce. The CBD provides a hub for finance and professional services, a centre for culture, recreation and leisure, and a focal point for higher education and international visitors. Businesses choose a CBD location because it offers a prestige location, ease of access for staff and clients, close proximity to clients, suppliers and competitors, and access to a full range of amenities including shops, services, cafes and restaurants.

The Port of Auckland is located in the CBD and handles cargo worth about NZ$ 24 billion each year.

When compared with Auckland, the CBDs of Australian cities tend to have a smaller role in their regional economies.

Rosebank

Rosebank, located in the western area of Auckland city, is a key manufacturing location for the city with over 8400 employees in 2007. In recent years, a number of businesses have relocated from central Auckland to Rosebank. Their key strengths are mainly in high value-added manufacturing, distribution, product development and advanced business services. With distribution links via port and airport and major distribution hubs to the national domestic economy and to international markets, a significant number of Rosebank businesses export and import products.

Tamaki Innovation Precinct

The Tamaki development area in the south east of Auckland city is home to the University of Auckland’s Tamaki Campus. Some 4000 employees are working in the area, mainly in manufacturing industries. With the development of the Tamaki Innovation Precinct over the next 20 years, around NZ$ 3 billion will be invested in an 100 ha area, with the vision to attract knowledge-based industries over this period. At least 10,000 staff and more students are expected to be located in New Zealand’s largest urban regeneration and transformation area.

The New Zealand Innovation Park (NZIP) will be located in the heart of Tamaki Innovation Precinct, dedicated to provide space for offices, company incubation and research, and offer a wide range of business development services.

Another 6000 residents already started settling next to the innovation precinct in The Stonefields residential zone, developed in a former quarry.
