Auckland prepares to welcome the sails for the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover

Next month the world’s fastest monohulls race into Auckland for the Auckland Stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The Stopover runs for 11 days from 8 – 18 March. It’s a decade since the Race last visited Auckland.

The 2011/2012 Volvo Ocean Race is a nine month marathon around the globe, deep into the bleak latitudes of the Southern Ocean and through the world’s most hostile seas. Six boats, including top contender Emirates Team New Zealand entry CAMPER, have been racing since October last year.

The arrival of the fleet will transform Auckland Viaduct into a vibrant Race Village for 11 days, with the Viaduct Events Centre acting as Race HQ.

The Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012, Auckland Stopover is funded by council controlled organisation, Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) and the Government’s Major Events Development Fund.
