Auckland’s marine sector is long-established and has been well regarded worldwide among those in the know for more than a century. But it burst upon the world scene in the 21st Century with Team New Zealand’s America’s Cup performances.
The marine sector is New Zealand’s largest non-food manufacturing industry, employing over 10,000 people in around 1000 companies. Turnover exceeds $2 billion, including around $700 million in exports.
The New Zealand Marine Industry Association (NZMI) predicts turnover will double by 2020, with expansion in Auckland’s north west (Yard 37) and Wynyard Quarter (CBD).
Natural advantage
For a small population, New Zealand boasts an incredible record in world sailing and it’s not hard to work out why. The climate and coastline couldn’t be more conducive to getting out on the water, and nowhere is this more evident than Auckland. The region boasts more boat ownership per head than any other city in the world.

With its stunning coastlines and three harbours, Auckland is the ideal hub for New Zealand’s marine industry. Nationally, 60 per cent of the country’s turnover by marine companies is Auckland-based.

Auckland has an extraordinary international reputation in superyacht design, custom construction and re-fit, with world-class facilities right in central Auckland. It’s a reputation earned by builders, artisans, suppliers, designers, naval architects and sailors over 100 years.
Auckland has the largest marine-skill base in the country and is home to leading marine companies such as Alloy Yachts, Yachting Developments Ltd, LOMOcean, McMullen & Wing, Rayglass Boats, Doyle Sales, Southern Spas, Core Builders Composites and Sealegs.

Full steam ahead
Yard 37 is a 20 hectare development north-west of Auckland created specifically for the design, manufacture and refit of superyachts. Facilities will be world class, specialists will be on site and, importantly, there is room for the companies located there and the yachts they work with to change and grow.
As part of a major CBD waterfront development, the marine precinct at Wynyard Quarter will include workshops, showrooms and offices. Purpose-built for superyacht refit and commissioning, space allows berthing for up to six 80m to 90m yachts at one time.
