35,000+ investors across New Zealand

When Kernel launched in Auckland in 2019, the gap it set out to fill wasn't a technical one. The funds existed. The market existed. What was missing was a way for everyday
New Zealanders to access the same kind of low-cost, transparent index investing that institutional investors had used for decades.

Founded by a small team with backgrounds across funds management, technology and design, Kernel has spent the years since translating a sophisticated category – index investing – into a platform that any New Zealander with a savings goal can use.

The context

For most New Zealanders, investing meant one of two things:  KiwiSaver, or a managed fund with active management fees quietly compounded against returns over decades. The kind of low-cost index-fund platforms that had reshaped personal wealth-building in the United States, the UK and Australia – Vanguard, Schwab, Stake – didn't have a meaningful local equivalent. That was the gap. Kernel's founders saw a country with a sophisticated financial system, a growing investor cohort, and no native platform built around low-cost, digital-first index investing. They set out to build one.

Why Auckland

For most New Zealanders, investing meant one of two things:  KiwiSaver, or a managed fund whose active management fees quietly compounded against returns over decades. The kind of low-cost index-fund platforms that had reshaped personal wealth-building in the United  States, the UK and Australia — Vanguard, Schwab, Stake — didn't have a  meaningful local equivalent.
That was the gap. Kernel's founders saw a country with a  sophisticated financial system, a growing investor cohort, and no native platform built around low-cost, digital-first index investing. They set out to build one.

“Building a fintech anywhere is hard. Building one in a market small enough to move fast, but sophisticated enough to take seriously, is one of Auckland's underrated advantages.”
— Rob Vickery, Hillfarrance Venture Capital

The city's tech and design talent pool is also the deepest in the  country. Kernel needed to build a regulated investment platform that was also genuinely well-designed for non-experts — and the people capable  of doing both kinds of work are concentrated here.

The outcome

In its first three years, Kernel grew from a single index fund to a  full platform offering dozens of funds, a KiwiSaver scheme, and accounts for self-directed investors. It crossed NZ$500 million in funds under  management and 35,000 investors — milestones that would be ambitious in  any market and exceptional in one the size of New Zealand.
More importantly, it changed the conversation. Index  investing has become a mainstream consumer category in New Zealand for  the first time, and Kernel's model — transparent fees, digital-first,  accessible — is now a benchmark other providers compare themselves  against. All of it built, run and headquartered in Auckland.
